Don’t Let a Niggle Ruin Your Summer

The weather improves, the garden calls, the golf clubs come out, the walking boots reappear, and suddenly everyone remembers they have a body.
And sometimes that body has opinions.
A stiff lower back after gardening.
A shoulder that complains after golf.
A hip that grumbles on longer walks.
A neck that doesn’t appreciate hours of driving to the coast.
At this time of year, I often see people who have gone from doing very little over winter to suddenly doing a lot. The problem is not always the activity itself. It is the sudden jump.
Your body likes movement, but it does not always like surprises.
“It’ll probably settle” — famous last words
Most people wait too long before getting help.
They feel a twinge, ignore it, carry on, then compensate around it. Before long, that small niggle becomes something more annoying. You start moving differently, sleeping badly, avoiding certain activities, or reaching for painkillers just to get through the day.
That is usually the point where people say, “I thought it would go away on its own.”
Sometimes it does. But if it keeps coming back, gets worse with activity, or starts affecting your day-to-day life, it is worth getting checked.
Common summer complaints we see at Hurley Clinic
This time of year, common problems include:
- Lower back pain after gardening or DIY
- Shoulder pain from golf, tennis, swimming or lifting
- Hip and knee pain from walking more
- Neck and upper back tension from driving or desk work
- Foot and ankle problems from changing footwear
- Old injuries flaring up when activity levels increase
None of these automatically mean something serious is going on, but they are signs that your body may not be moving as well as it could.
Osteopathy is not just for when you can barely move
A lot of people think they need to be in severe pain before booking an appointment.
You don’t.
In fact, it is often better to get things looked at early, before the pain becomes more established. Osteopathic treatment aims to help improve movement, reduce strain, and get you back doing the things you enjoy.
That might be gardening without dreading the next morning.
Playing golf without protecting your back.
Walking further without your hip complaining.
Getting through summer plans without your body becoming the limiting factor.
Move better. Feel better.
Pain has a habit of shrinking your world. You stop doing things “just in case”. You avoid certain movements. You put off plans.
That is not how summer should feel.
If something has started to ache, pull, catch, tighten, or nag — don’t wait until it becomes a bigger problem.
Book an appointment at Hurley Clinic and let’s see what is going on.
